JCB Expands Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Health Platform with New Research Director Role

Jay Shaw and Jennifer Gibson

We are excited to announce that Dr. Jay Shaw has accepted the role of Research Director, Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics & Health at the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics (JCB). Dr. Shaw is a Scientist at the Women’s College Hospital’s Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care (WIHV) and an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. He is also a current AMS Phoenix Fellow focused on ethics and governance of AI for health.

Dr. Shaw’s research program examines the implementation of health system innovations focused on integrated, inter-sectorial care, and the ways in which emerging digital technologies shape the possibilities for such health system innovations. His growing program of research on AI in health care approaches the topic from a responsible innovation perspective, highlighting the importance of ethically-oriented design and implementation strategies that promote the positive effects of AI while reducing the likelihood of unintended consequences (such as exacerbating health inequities or entrenching biases in algorithmic decision support systems).

Dr. Shaw will help to shape the research directions for the JCB’s Ethics and AI for Good Health platform, and will be responsible for administering the JCB Scholars Program in AI Ethics & Health, which was created in partnership with AMS Healthcare. His work will support the efforts of the JCB to build an ethically oriented community of scholarship and practice in health-related AI, and will facilitate the development of world-leading research and teaching on AI ethics and health at the JCB.
